Learn more about how to navigate through Back Bay Station during construction
The MBTA is installing commuter rail fare gates in Back Bay Station beginning in early 2027. The Fare Gates project is separate from the concourse renovations. To learn more about the Fare Gates project, please visit www.mbta.com/CRFareGates.
Current Impacts and Layout of the Station
Please allow an extra five minutes as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station.
Access to at least one entrance/exit on both Clarendon Street and Dartmouth Street will be maintained throughout construction. Elevator access will also be maintained at all times.
Phase 1 Work Zone Layout in Effect through October 2026
In January 2026, crews began the incremental establishment of a new layout for station work zones for Phase 1 construction.
The northeast door to Clarendon Street will remain closed.
The Orange Line stairs closest to Clarendon Street are closed during this construction phase. Access to the other sets of Orange Line stairs will be maintained.
Access to the Orange Line platform elevator will be maintained, with a mobile fare gate placed by the concourse-level entrance.
Two mobile light towers have been installed in the station busway. These temporary lights will be on from dusk until dawn each night and will enhance nighttime illumination and safety for station customers. The towers will remain in place for approximately six months while the project team designs and installs a permanent emergency lighting system upgrade.
Phase 1 work zone locations
New Bike Cage Now Open
The new Pedal and Park Facility is now open and fully operational. This new bike cage is located outside the station on the bus loop at the Clarendon Street entrance. This facility is free to use with a registered CharlieCard.
Please discontinue the use of the old bike cage facility and relocate all bikes to the new facility. Any bikes that remain after October 2, 2026 will be removed by the MBTA.
Riders with existing bike cage access are able to access the new bike cage without needing to register their cards again.
