Rendering of Dartmouth Street entrance in final condition
The following is an update on construction activity for the Back Bay Station Concourse Renovation Project.
Please allow an extra five minutes as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station.
Current ACTIVITIES and Impacts
Crews are getting ready to transition from the Pre-Construction (Enabling) Phase to the beginning of major construction in the coming weeks (see Upcoming Activities and Impacts below). Pre-construction activities are ongoing:
Constructing the new bike cage outside the Clarendon Street entrance of the station.
Building electrical infrastructure throughout the station.
Pouring concrete and other construction activities around the central stairwell to the Orange Line platform. This work is in preparation for the improved layout for customers navigating the station. Access to this stairwell will not be interrupted.
Constructing new offices for the Transit Police and Station Inspector, as well as a new operations center for MBTA staff within the station.
Current work zone locations as of December 22, 2025
Upcoming Activities and Impacts
New Work Zone Layout beginning in December
In the coming weeks, a new and expanded work zone will be established for the start of Phase 1 construction. This work zone will be established to allow crews to reconstruct the center and east side of the station concourse and exterior structure adjacent to Clarendon Street (see new station layout below).
The following impacts will be established throughout Phase 1 (until Summer 2026):
· The northeast door to Clarendon Street will remain closed.
· The Orange Line stairs closest to Clarendon St. will be closed.
· Access to the elevator to the Orange Line will be maintained, with a mobile fare gate in place on the concourse level.
Upcoming station layout beginning January 2026
New Bike Cage Opening in January
Beginning in January, a new bike cage will open outside the station at the Clarendon Street entrance and replace the existing bike cage. Bikes that are stored in the existing bike cage have been tagged to inform owners about transitioning to the new bike cage by January 15, 2026. The existing bike cage will be removed beginning February 1, 2026. Additional reminders will be sent through this email list.
