Construction Update - January 16, 2026

Rendering of Dartmouth Street entrance in final condition

The following is an update on construction activity for the Back Bay Station Concourse Renovation Project.

Please allow an extra five minutes as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station.

Current Impacts and Layout of the Station

New Phase 1 Work Zone Layout will be Established This Month

This month, crews will begin the incremental establishment of a new layout for station work zones for the start of Phase 1 construction. The northeast door to Clarendon Street will remain closed, and the Orange Line stairs closest to Clarendon Street will be closed throughout this construction phase. Access to the elevator will be maintained, with a mobile fare gate placed by the concourse-level entrance.

During Phase 1, crews will reconstruct the center and east side of the station concourse and exterior structure adjacent to Clarendon Street. We anticipate Phase 1 being in place until Summer 2026.

See below for the Phase 1 station layout.

Current work zone locations as of January 16, 2026

Upcoming Activities and Impacts

New Bike Cage Opening by the Week of February 9 (REVISED Schedule)

The new bike cage is now anticipated to open the week of February 9. Once the new bike cage is in place, the existing bike cage inside the concourse will be closed and removed. The new bike cage will be located outside the station at the Clarendon Street entrance (as shown in the Phase 1 station layout above).

Bikes that are stored in the existing bike cage have been tagged to inform owners about transitioning to the new bike cage once it is available. The existing bike cage will be removed the week of February 9.

Scaffolding on the Orange Line Platform

In the coming weeks, scaffolding will be erected along the Orange Line platform. Please be aware of this scaffolding as crews complete work activities and do not enter active work zones.
