Rendering of Dartmouth Street entrance in final condition
The following is an update on construction activity for the Back Bay Station Concourse Renovation Project.
Please allow an extra five minutes as you get used to new construction zones and paths of travel at the station.
New Bike Cage opening in the next 2-6 weeks (Revised schedule)
The new bike cage outside of the station near Clarendon Street
The new bike cage is now anticipated to open in the next two to six weeks. The new bike cage will be located outside the station at the Clarendon Street entrance (as shown in the Phase 1 station layout below). Another announcement will be made when the bike cage has officially opened.
Bikes that are stored in the existing bike cage have been tagged to inform owners about transitioning to the new bike cage once it is available. The existing bike cage will be closed two weeks after the new cage opens, allowing crossover time for riders to access both cages.
Riders with existing bike cage access will be able to access the new bike cage without needing to register their cards again.
Current Impacts and Layout of the Station
The station remains in the current Phase 1 layout of work zone areas. The northeast door to Clarendon Street is closed, and the Orange Line stairs closest to Clarendon St. are also closed throughout this construction phase. Access to the elevator is maintained, with a mobile fare gate placed by the concourse-level entrance.
During Phase 1, crews are reconstructing the center and east side of the station concourse and exterior structure adjacent to Clarendon Street. We anticipate Phase 1 being in place until Summer 2026.
See below for the Phase 1 station layout.
Current work zone locations as of April 2, 2026
Orange Line Stairway by Clarendon Street Closing
Beginning on April 13, the stairway to the Orange Line closest to Clarendon Street will be closed. Riders should use the other stairways in the station to access the Orange Line during the closure.
Scaffolding on the Orange Line Platform
In the coming weeks, scaffolding will be erected along the Orange Line platform. Please be aware of this scaffolding as crews complete work activities and do not enter active work zones.
