The following is an update on construction activity for the Back Bay Station Concourse Renovation Project.
Please allow an extra five minutes as you get used to construction zones and paths of travel at the station.
Current Impacts and Layout of the Station
New Phase 1 Layout in place until October 2026
The current layout of work zones within the station will now remain through October of this year. Crews continue work within work zones on the center and east side of the station concourse as part of Phase 1 construction. The northeast door to Clarendon Street and the Orange Line stairs closest to Clarendon Street. remain closed throughout this construction phase. Access to the Orange Line elevator is maintained, with a mobile fare gate placed by the concourse-level entrance.

Upcoming Activities and Impacts
Phase 2 Beginning in October
The next phase of construction, Phase 2, will now begin in October 2026. During this construction phase, crews will take down the barricades on the east side of the station and establish new work zones on the west side of the station adjacent to Dartmouth Street.
Phase 2 Anticipate Impacts
Orange Line Access
During Phase 2, mobile fare gates will be installed in a new, temporary alignment for accessing the Orange Line.
The Orange Line stairway closest to Dartmouth Street will be closed and the stairway closest to Clarendon Street, that is currently closed for Phase 1, will reopen.
Station entrances
All four entrances will remain open throughout Phase 2, including the Clarendon Street door that is currently closed for Phase 1.
More information, including a diagram of the Phase 2 work zone layout, will be shared in the coming months.
New Bike Cage Opening This fall
The new bike cage is now anticipated to open this fall. Once the new bike cage is in place, the existing bike cage inside the concourse will be closed and removed. The new bike cage will be located outside the station at the Clarendon Street entrance (as shown in the Phase 1 station layout above). The existing bike cage will be removed two weeks after the opening of the new bike cage.
